If you’re looking for a photography adventure in New England – head on up to Cutler, Maine to hang out with a few thousand puffins. They migrate every year to Machias Seal Island which is just 10 miles off the coast of Cutler. Here are a couple tips to get you started:
- Call Captain Andy at Bold Coast Charter Company to book your trip from Cutler to the island. His website has all the details and he was awesome. An excellent captain and full of details and humor on the trip and back.
- Call Ellen & Rocky at the Riverside Inn & Restaurant and reserve a room for the weekend. They have 4 rooms at their B&B in East Machias, which is just 20-25 minutes from the boat launch. You will probably have to be at the boat launch around 7am, so stay at the inn the night before, and make a reservation for dinner as well. Rocky is an amazing chef and you don’t want to miss out on what he creates with fresh fish and scallops.
This is a great way to spend a weekend. It may be too late in the season to make it this year (Andy’s trips fill up fast) so if you want to go another time put a reminder on your calendar to call him in the beginning of March. Yes, really, call in early March! I’m not kidding that the trips book quickly.
Here’s one of the thousands of puffins we saw up there this weekend. I have many more puffin photos to come, as well as some photos from other stops over the past weekend.
